Fira

Fira is the capital and the place where the heart of the whole island beats! They are located on the west side of the island, on the rocks of the caldera directly opposite the volcano, which entails a wonderful view. Furthermore, they are the cultural and commercial center of Santorini, gathering thousands of tourists, especially in the summer months.

There you will find countless options in terms of dining, nightlife and entertainment, and there are also various attractions worth seeing. So wander through the winding poplar alleys of Fira, sit for a coffee or a drink in one of the shops overlooking the eerie beauty of the caldera and finally visit some of the churches and museums of the island, such as the Archaeological Museum, the Museum of Prehistoric Thira, the Megaro Gyzi and the Santozeum.

Ammoudi

Tucked away in red volcanic rocks, below the beautiful Oia and next to the deep blue waters of the Aegean is a beautiful location of Santorini, Ammoudi. Ammoudi was the main port of Oia during the 19th century and all the trade of the region passed through there. Today it is a must see spot on the island, especially for food and more specifically for fresh seafood. To reach it you have to go down the 214 steps that separate it from Oia, but believe me the location will compensate you!

Oia

But the star of Santorini is of course the much-photographed Oia! It is located in the northern part of the island and is considered the best place to see the sunset, not only on the island, not in Greece, but by many in the whole world!

The best spot is at the Castle, but if you want to see the sunset there, you should arrive well before sunset, as it’s always unbreakable! Also, it is interesting to note that Oia was the first settlement to be classified as a protected area in 1976, due to its unrivaled beauty and special architecture! It is estimated that there are over sixty churches in Oia, hence the countless domes that appear on the postcards of the island! Finally, don’t miss the opportunity to sit in one of the hundreds of restaurants and café bars in Oia, which are among the best in Santorini.

Imerovigli

In fourth place we find a part that has even become a song! Imerovigli is located at the top of a cliff and is considered to have the most breathtaking view of the caldera and the opposite islets. The rooftops of stylish bars, expensive restaurants and luxury small hotels are popular spots to watch the sunset. Finally, it is worth visiting the church of Panagia tis Maltese with its imposing wood-carved iconostasis and the icon of the Virgin, which is said to have been found in Malta!

Firostefani

At the end of Imerovigli there is the monastery of Agios Nikolaos, which is considered the border between Imerovigli and Firostefani. “The crown of Fira” as its name testifies, is located in the northern part of Fira, on the “eyebrow” of the caldera and covers a distance of about 10 minutes on foot! It is considered a unique place, offering visitors an unrivaled view of the volcano and the islets that surround it, due to its special location! Finally, in Firostefani you will find great suggestions for food, while it is also an alternative, calmer location to enjoy the sunset.

How are you going?

To go to Santorini, one has two options. Either by boat from the port of Piraeus, or by plane. If you choose the first option, you will be on the island and the port of Thira in 4.5 to 8 hours depending on the ship you choose. If, on the other hand, you choose to approach the island by air, you will land at the National Airport of Santorini, which is located approximately five and a half kilometers from Thira. From there you can take the bus and be in the city center in nine minutes.

What to eat

Santorini cuisine is characterized by dishes containing ingredients that are inextricably linked to the Mediterranean diet. The agricultural production of the island, which due to the volcanic soil, offers special culinary delights, satisfying even the most demanding palates. So you are not allowed to leave the island without trying some of the most famous dishes of the region.

Dive into the deep blue waters and you will ride donkeys

Go to the picturesque port of Corfu in Santorini, after all, the beautiful island can combine tourist traffic with beautiful picturesque places. A donkey ride on the island will be truly unforgettable and definitely take the route from the beach of Corfu to the less touristic destination of Manolas.
